Wudu: Virtues and Health Benefits

Wudu: Virtues and Health Benefits

WuḍūThere Is No Ṣalāh Without Wuḍūʾ

Why Wuḍūʾ Matters

Ṣalāh is not accepted without ritual purity (Ṭahārah) of the body, clothing, and place of prayer. Wuḍūʾ is a prerequisite for Ṣalāh. Both the Qur’an and the Sunnah clearly command believers to perform Wuḍūʾ before praying.

The Qur’an says:

Translation (5:6):

O you who believe! When you rise for prayer, wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows, wipe over your heads, and wash your feet up to the ankles. If you are in a state requiring total purification, then purify yourselves… Allah does not wish to place hardship upon you, but He wishes to purify you and complete His favor upon you, so that you may be grateful.

  1. Virtues of Wuḍūʾ 🌟

Wuḍūʾ is not just washing—it is preparing your heart, body, and mind to stand before Allah. Cleanliness is part of faith, strength, confidence, and dignity.

Wuḍūʾ Is the Key

“The key to Paradise is Ṣalāh, and the key to Ṣalāh is Wuḍūʾ.”(Jāmiʿ at-Tirmidhī 4)

A Mark of Honor on the Day of Judgment

“On the Day of Resurrection, my Ummah will be radiant from Wuḍūʾ.”(Jāmiʿ at-Tirmidhī 607)

Ṣalāh Without Wuḍūʾ Is Not Accepted

“The prayer of one who is impure is not accepted until he performs Wuḍūʾ.”(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 225)

b. How to Perform Wuḍūʾ (Step by Step)

Niyyah (Intention)

Intention is in the heart. There are no fixed words. It is recommended to say:

Actions are judged by intentions.”(Sunan an-Nasāʾī 75)

Remember:  A shower alone is not Wuḍūʾ unless you intend Wuḍūʾ and perform its required actions.

 Istinjāʾ (Cleaning Private Parts)

Istinjāʾ is not part of Wuḍūʾ but part of overall purity. Using water is Sunnah; using toilet paper alone is allowed when water is unavailable.

It was narrated that ‘Aishah said: “I never saw the Messenger of Allah come out of the toilet without first (cleansing himself) with water”. Sunan Ibn Majah 354 (Book 1, Hadith 88)

Anas bin Malik told me that when this Verse: “In it (the mosque) are men who love to clean and to purify themselves. And Allah loves those who make themselves clean and pure”. was revealed, the Messenger of Allah said: ‘O Ansar! Allah has praised you for your cleanliness. What is the nature of your cleanliness?’ They said: ‘We perform ablution for prayer and we take bath to cleanse ourselves of impurity due to sexual activity, and we clean ourselves with water (after urinating). He said: ‘This is what it is. So adhere to it’.” Sunan Ibn Majah 355 (Book 1, Hadith 89)

Washing the Hands (3 times – Sunnah)

Wash both hands up to the wrists.

Wash your hands after waking up, for you do not know where they spent the night.(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī)

There are so many contagious diseases, the medical experts are advising people to wash our hands with soap a few times, especially after shaking hands with people.

Rinsing the Mouth & Using Miswāk

Rinse thoroughly. Using a Miswāk or toothbrush is highly recommended.

importance of using a Miswak (tooth-stick).

Anas (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “I stress upon you to use Miswak (tooth- stick)”. Al-Bukhari. Riyad as-Salihin 1199 (Book 8, Hadith 209) The Prophet (ﷺ) taught that using a Miswak (tooth-stick) cleanses and purifies the mouth and pleases Allah.

‘Aishah (May Allah be pleased with her) reported: Aishah The Prophet ﷺ said, “The Miswak (tooth-stick) cleanses and purifies the mouth and pleases the Rabb”. An-Nasa’i and Ibn Khuzaimah. Riyad as-Salihin 1202 (Book 8, Hadith 212)

The prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) also said: “Jabrael (peace be upon him) recommended using a miswak so much that I feared that it would be made obligatory (fard)”.  The Prophet (SAWS) used teeth brush( Miswak) for every Salaat and said:

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Had I not thought it difficult for my Ummah, I would have commanded them to use the Miswak (tooth-stick) before every Salat”. Al-Bukhari and Muslim. Riyad as-Salihin 1196 (Book 8, Hadith 206)

Important: Clean breath and hygiene are part of Muslim character.

Cleaning the Nose (3 times – Sunnah)

Inhale water gently and blow it out. Be careful during fasting.

Important: it is hygienic and take care of human health and spiritual needs. Most of the contagious disease enter through the nose. The nose hairs try to stop it from entering.

Washing the Face is obligatory (Farḍ)

Wash from forehead to chin once (required), three times (Sunnah). Rub the beard if present.

Important: Washing and rubbing the face properly is refreshing and you would feel calm. When you study or work and feel tired or bore, you wash your face and rub it thoroughly.

Washing the Arms Including Elbows is obligatory (Farḍ)

Wash right arm first, then left—once required, three times Sunnah.

Wiping the Head (Masḥ) is obligatory (Fard)

Wipe the head once with wet hands, front to back and back to front.

The majority of scholars requires Masah at least over one fourth of the head especially of the from quarter of the head.

 Wiping the Ears (Sunnah)

Use wet fingers to clean inside and outside of both ears.

Washing the Feet Including Ankles is obligatory (Farḍ)

Wash right foot first, then left including the ankles. Clean between the toes. The Sunni Schools consider washing the two feet obligatory including the ankles according to the Qur’an and Sunnah[1].

Cleaning between the toes is hygienic and prevents fungal toenails, foot calluses. Foot-washing for Fajr and Isha Salaat reduces itch and odor-causing bacteria and fungi that accumulates there[2] .

If one makes Wudu in the morning and then wear thick socks or leather socks, it is allowed to wipe over it for the next four Salaat whether at work or home. A Traveler is allowed to do Masah over socks for three days if socks are not taken out during night

 Duʿāʾ (Supplication) After Wuḍūʾ

(I bear witness that there no deity but Allah and I bear witness that Muhammad is servent and the messenger of Allah)

good to say after:

O Allah, make me among those who are pure and those who constantly repent.

Tartib,  Sequence in Wudu

Majority of the scholars consider sequence and continuity (Tartib) in Wudu essential in the light of the Qur’an and Sunnah.

[1] Note: The Imamiyyah (Shi`a) School allow wiping over the feet with wet fingers from the toes to the ankles differing from the Sunni Schools in their interpretation of the Qur’anic verse about performing Wudu (Qur’an, 5:6)
